Today marks a significant milestone for Boston-based metal band Gloomlurker as they unveil their debut EP, “Terror Absolute”. Comprising three tracks, this EP showcases the band’s unique fusion of black metal, doom metal, death metal, and sludge. The recording process took place at New Alliance Audio with additional sessions at Pepper’s Palace, culminating in a masterful mix by Aki McCullough and mastering by James Plotkin.
Each track on “Terror Absolute” delves into distinct themes and influences, offering listeners a glimpse into Gloomlurker’s musical narrative. Jess Lom, the band’s guitarist, bassist, and vocalist, provides insights into the stories behind these tracks. Let’s explore the journey through the EP as shared by Jess Lom.
The EP opens with “Nightwarden”, a track inspired by the character Nightwarden Minthara from Baldur’s Gate 3. Jess Lom sheds light on the personal undertones of the lyrics, touching on themes of struggle and resilience, particularly in the context of the transgender experience. The song serves as a poignant reflection on the challenges faced by marginalized communities.
Following “Nightwarden” is “Harrowing”, a musical tribute to the Locked Tomb book series. Drawing inspiration from the world of lesbian space necromancers, this track weaves a tale of dark allure and mystique. Jess Lom reveals that “Harrowing” was the genesis of Gloomlurker’s creative journey, setting the tone for their exploration of slow death metal with a narrative twist.
The EP concludes with “Hjaalmarch”, a composition named after a region in Skyrim, a beloved video game shared by Connor and Jess. While the song’s title pays homage to this virtual realm, its lyrics delve into the depths of mental health struggles, touching on themes of depression and contemplation of mortality. “Hjaalmarch” stands as a collaborative effort by the band, offering a glimpse into Gloomlurker’s evolving sound and storytelling prowess.
As Gloomlurker unveils “Terror Absolute” to the world, their debut EP serves as a testament to the band’s musical dexterity and thematic depth. Through a melodic tapestry of influences and inspirations, Gloomlurker invites listeners on a journey through the realms of metal, blending genres and narratives to create a captivating sonic experience.
The release of “Terror Absolute” not only marks a milestone for Gloomlurker but also heralds a new chapter in the metal music landscape. With their innovative approach to storytelling and genre fusion, Gloomlurker emerges as a promising voice in the metal scene, offering a refreshing perspective on the power of music to transcend boundaries and resonate with diverse audiences.
