Cryptopsy Rises From the Ashes: A Review of “As Gomorrah Burns”

Canadian technical death metal veterans, Cryptopsy, roared back onto the scene in September 2023 with their eighth studio album, “As Gomorrah Burns.” After a tumultuous period marked by lineup changes and a less-than-stellar received album, “The Unspoken King,” Cryptopsy had a lot to prove. Does “As Gomorrah Burns” live up to the legacy of their genre-defining releases like “None So Vile”?

The answer is a resounding yes, with a caveat. Cryptopsy hasn’t strayed far from their established formula – blazing speed, dizzyingly complex riffs, and inhuman drumming by Flo Mounier. Tracks like the opener “Lascivious Undivine” are a masterclass in technical brutality, showcasing the band’s instrumental prowess.

However, “As Gomorrah Burns” isn’t just a retread of past glories. There’s a newfound focus on melody and atmosphere on this album. Songs like “Flayed the Swine” and the surprisingly melancholic “Obeisant” showcase a more nuanced side to Cryptopsy’s sound. This willingness to experiment keeps the album fresh and engaging.

Vocally, Matt McGachy acquits himself well. While his guttural growls may not possess the same iconic status as Lord Worm’s on “None So Vile,” they perfectly complement the music’s intensity.

The production on “As Gomorrah Burns” is crisp and clean, allowing every instrument to shine through the sonic maelstrom. This is a vast improvement over some of the band’s previous outings.

Overall, “As Gomorrah Burns” is a successful comeback for Cryptopsy. It captures the band’s signature sound while injecting a touch of modern flair. While it may not quite reach the heights of “None So Vile,” it’s a worthy addition to any death metal fan’s collection.

For those unfamiliar with Cryptopsy, “As Gomorrah Burns” is a great starting point. It’s a tight, well-produced album that showcases everything the band does best. However, for longtime fans yearning for a return to form, “As Gomorrah Burns” might leave them wanting just a touch more of the unadulterated savagery that made Cryptopsy a legend in the first place.
