Former members of the renowned metal band Iced Earth, Matt Barlow and Freddie Vidales, have made headlines with the announcement of their upcoming fourth album under the banner of Ashes of Ares. Titled “New Messiahs,” the album is scheduled for release in Europe on July 18 and in North America on August 8, 2025, through ROAR!
A music video for the album’s lead single, “Wake Of Vultures,” has already been unveiled, giving fans a taste of the band’s evolving sound. Matt Barlow describes the track as a cautionary tale, delving into themes of misery and isolation.
Formed in 2012, Ashes of Ares emerged as a creative outlet for Barlow and Vidales, backed by the drumming prowess of Van Williams. Their self-titled debut album in 2013 marked the beginning of a journey that resonated strongly with metal enthusiasts in both the USA and Europe.
Following Van Williams’ departure in 2017, Matt and Freddie pressed on, crafting a more intense and expansive sound with their second album, “Well Of Souls,” released in 2018. This was followed by “Emperors And Fools” in 2022, which showcased a new chapter in the band’s sonic evolution.
Now, with “New Messiahs,” Ashes of Ares continues to push musical boundaries, delivering a 12-track album that promises emotional depth, sharp songwriting, and captivating melodies. Featuring collaborations with notable artists like Kyle Taylor and Todd La Torre of Queensrÿche, the album is a testament to the duo’s creative prowess.
The recording of “New Messiahs” saw Matt Barlow on vocals, Freddie Vidales on guitars and bass, with guest drums by Kyle Taylor. The album’s production and mastering were handled by Byron Filson at Villain Recording in Phoenix, Arizona, while the striking artwork was designed by Kamil Pietruczynik, adding a visual dimension to the auditory experience.
Ashes of Ares’ dedication to their craft is evident in their commitment to delivering powerful music that transcends boundaries. With “New Messiahs,” they further solidify their position as storytellers and architects of a sound that resonates deeply with their global fan base.
Looking ahead, Ashes of Ares is set to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Iced Earth’s iconic album, “The Dark Saga,” with a European tour in September/October 2025. Vidales’ tenure with Iced Earth from 2008 to 2012, along with Barlow’s two stints from 1993 to 2003 and 2007 to 2011, underpin their musical legacy.
Reflecting on his time with Iced Earth and the evolution of Ashes of Ares, Matt Barlow emphasizes the importance of establishing a unique identity for the latter, separate from his previous endeavors. The band’s musical journey continues to evolve, drawing on their individual experiences and influences.
As the metal scene eagerly anticipates the release of “New Messiahs,” Ashes of Ares stands poised to captivate audiences once again with their distinctive blend of storytelling, emotion, and musical prowess.
With a rich history in the metal genre and a promising future ahead, Ashes of Ares remains a force to be reckoned with, solidifying their place in the pantheon of metal music.
