A History of Iced Earth

Formation and Early Years (1984–1990)

Iced Earth emerged from the fiery depths of Tampa, Florida in 1984, born from the creative genius of guitarist Jon Schaffer. Originally known as the Rose, then Purgatory, the band solidified its lineup with Schaffer and drummer Greg Seymour. In 1990, the world was introduced to the raw power of Iced Earth with the release of their debut album, a monumental moment that set the stage for their future dominance in the metal scene.

With their demo EP Enter the Realm making waves and a deal signed with Century Media Records, Iced Earth unleashed their self-titled album in 1990, followed by Night of the Stormrider in 1991. These early years laid the foundation for the band's epic journey, showcasing Schaffer's songwriting prowess and setting the stage for what was to come.

The Barlow Era (1994–2003)

After a brief hiatus, Iced Earth returned in 1994 with a new lead vocalist, Matt Barlow, whose powerful vocals propelled the band to new heights. The Barlow era saw the release of iconic albums such as Burnt Offerings (1995), The Dark Saga (1996), Something Wicked This Way Comes (1998), and Horror Show (2001). These albums solidified Iced Earth's reputation as masters of their craft, blending intricate storytelling with crushing riffs.

However, the Barlow era came to an end in 2003 when he left the band to pursue a career in law enforcement, leaving fans wondering about the future of Iced Earth. Despite this setback, the band persevered, enlisting Tim "Ripper" Owens of Judas Priest fame as their new vocalist and releasing The Glorious Burden (2004) and Framing Armageddon (2007) with his powerful voice at the helm.

The Block Era (2011–2017)

In 2011, Iced Earth welcomed Stu Block of Into Eternity as their new lead vocalist, marking the beginning of a new era for the band. With Block's dynamic range and stage presence, Iced Earth delivered the critically acclaimed album Dystopia in 2011, garnering praise from fans and critics alike for its intensity and melodic complexity.

The Block era continued with the release of Plagues of Babylon in 2014 and Incorruptible in 2017, showcasing the band's unwavering commitment to their craft and their ability to evolve while staying true to their roots. Despite lineup changes, Iced Earth remained a force to be reckoned with, captivating audiences with their electrifying performances and timeless metal anthems.
