Last September, British synth manufacturer UDO unveiled a new synthesizer, DMNO, that's now available to order. As big fans of UDO's previous instruments, we were naturally excited to give the synth a spin at NAMM 2026, and DMNO thoroughly impressed us with its punchy, versatile sound and flexible architecture. UDO has a history of creating innovative instruments like the Super 6, Super 8, and Super Gemini, which have left reviewers dazzled. DMNO continues this trend by offering a polyphonic, multitimbral hybrid analogue/digital synthesizer that pushes boundaries in sound design and performance.
DMNO is structured around a dual-synth concept, taking it to the next level with creative Play Modes and a Dynamic Multi-Core Stereo filter. The synthesizer consists of two fully independent four-voice synths, each with its own set of controls. It offers eight Play Modes that determine how the synth engines interact, providing a wide range of sonic possibilities. From traditional layering to innovative configurations like Series and Chaos modes, DMNO offers a unique and engaging playing experience.
Like UDO's Super series, DMNO features FPGA-based digital oscillators and an analogue signal path and filter. With a mix of waveshapes including sine, saw, square, triangle, and pulse, along with user-assignable complex waveforms, DMNO delivers a rich sonic palette. The synth also includes two tempo-syncable LFOs, cross-modulation, and PWM capabilities, offering extensive modulation possibilities for sound sculpting.
DMNO is an eight-voice polyphonic synthesizer that drops to four "super voices" in Binaural Mode, providing independent tuning and modulation for each stereo channel. The synth incorporates a newly-designed Dynamic Multi-Core Stereo VCF with various filter modes, overdrive, and multiple routing options. Additionally, it features a 32-bit DSP digital effects engine with delay, reverb, EQ, overdrive, distortion, and chorus effects, enhancing the sound design capabilities of the instrument.
Equipped with a 44-key Fatar keybed, DMNO offers channel aftertouch and a two-axis bender for expressive playing. It includes a 64-step sequencer, multi-mode arpeggiator, and a high-contrast electroluminescent vacuum fluorescent display. In terms of connectivity, DMNO boasts a built-in 2-in/2-out 24-bit USB digital audio interface, MIDI ports, CV and gate/clock outputs, and various pedal inputs, catering to a wide range of studio and performance setups.
UDO's press release describes DMNO as an instrument that embodies the brand's ethos of 'The Power of Play.' With a bold and expressive character, DMNO offers a unique playing experience that goes beyond traditional synthesis. Priced at £2599/€2969, DMNO is available in black and white editions, each exuding its own distinct aesthetic appeal reminiscent of classic synthesizers like the Oberheim Two Voice.
Overall, DMNO represents a significant step forward for UDO, delivering a powerful and versatile synthesizer that caters to the needs of modern musicians and sound designers. With its innovative features, high-quality sound engine, and robust construction, DMNO stands out as a top contender in the ever-evolving world of synthesizers.
