Finnish melodic death metal titans Insomnium returned in 2023 with their ninth studio album, “Anno 1696,” a harrowing concept piece inspired by a period of immense hardship in Scandinavia.
Building upon the critical acclaim of their previous releases, “Anno 1696” delves into the despair and desolation of the late 17th century, a time marked by widespread famine and religious persecution. The album’s concept, based on a short story by Insomnium’s bassist/vocalist Niilo Sevänen, weaves a narrative of struggle and sorrow, mirroring the bleak realities of the era.
Musically, “Anno 1696” finds Insomnium at their finest. The album seamlessly blends their signature brand of melodic death metal with haunting atmospherics, creating a soundscape that is both beautiful and brutally heavy. Soaring guitar leads intertwine with Ville Friman’s cavernous vocals, while galloping drum patterns propel the listener through a desolate soundscape.
Several standout tracks showcase the album’s strengths. The opening title track sets the stage with its sweeping soundscapes and melancholic mood. “White Christ,” featuring guest vocals from Sakis Tolis of Rotting Christ, is a sonic stormcloud of crushing riffs and anguished screams. “Lilian,” on the other hand, offers a touch of melodic respite with its catchy chorus and driving rhythm section.
The album’s closer, “The Rapids,” is a fitting conclusion, a seven-minute epic that builds in intensity before exploding into a cathartic release. Piano flourishes add a touch of elegance to the track, showcasing the band’s ability to incorporate unexpected elements into their sound.
“Anno 1696” is a masterfully crafted album that cements Insomnium’s position as one of the leading lights in melodic death metal. With its bleak atmosphere, compelling narrative, and powerful songwriting, the album is a must-listen for fans of the genre and anyone seeking a truly immersive musical experience.
