Hooded Menace, the Finnish death-doom band, has unveiled their latest album, "Lachrymose Monuments of Obscuration," showcasing their enduring presence in the underground metal scene for over twenty years. The band's dedication to classic horror themes is evident in this monumental release, demonstrating their commitment to evolving within the genre.
The album, officially released on October 3 via Season of Mist, maintains the eerie spirit that has defined Hooded Menace since its inception in 2007. The cover art by Wes Benscoter pays homage to the "Blind Dead" films, setting the tone for a haunting musical journey that blends elements of Candlemass and Paradise Lost with the band's unique twist.
“Lachrymose Monuments of Obscuration” transcends traditional death-doom boundaries by infusing '80s heavy metal influences, as showcased in tracks like “Twilight Passages” and “Lugubrious Dance.” The album weaves a sonic tapestry that interlaces neon keys, bone-crunching riffs, and classic doom elements, creating a rich and dynamic listening experience.
One of the standout tracks, “Portrait Without a Face,” introduces a haunting cello melody alongside Pekka Koskelo's powerful drumming, adding a new dimension to Hooded Menace's sound. The album culminates in “Into Haunted Oblivion,” where former live bassist Antti Poutanen's sorrowful cello performance enhances the band's atmospheric journey.
Lead vocalist Harri Kuokkanen's growling vocals, coupled with the band's intricate instrumentation, evoke a sense of foreboding darkness throughout the album. Hooded Menace's ability to blend macabre themes with musical prowess sets them apart in the death-doom genre, captivating listeners with their ghoulish storytelling.
With “Lachrymose Monuments of Obscuration,” Hooded Menace continues to push boundaries and redefine the conventions of death-doom music. Their innovative approach to songwriting and storytelling cements their position as a formidable force in the metal landscape, appealing to both traditional and contemporary metal enthusiasts.
