British doom metal outfit Godthrymm returns with “Distortions,” their sophomore album and the second chapter in a planned trilogy by frontman Hamish Glencross. Released in August 2023, the record builds upon the foundation laid by their 2020 debut “Reflections,” offering a deeper exploration of melancholy and despair while hinting at a flicker of resilience.
Featuring members with experience in legendary bands like My Dying Bride and Anathema, Godthrymm isn’t afraid to wear its influences on its sleeve. The music evokes the classic British doom sound of the early 90s, characterized by downtuned guitars, mournful vocals, and a glacial pace. However, “Distortions” isn’t simply a nostalgia trip. The songwriting is thoughtful and nuanced, with moments of beauty emerging from the crushing riffs and sorrowful atmosphere.
