Flat Earth, a rock band hailing from Helsinki, Finland, has recently unveiled their latest single, “1985,” featuring former members of renowned bands like HIM and Amorphis. The group, consisting of Mikko “Linde” Lindström on guitar, Niclas Etelävuori on bass, and Anttoni “Anthony” Pikkarainen on vocals, continues to captivate audiences with their unique blend of heavy rock and melodic alternative rock.
The song “1985” delves into the theme of memories and experiences that shape individuals over time, exploring the enduring impact of the past on personal growth. Through its heavy guitars, melodic tones, and organic instrumentation, the track pays homage to the grunge era of the 1990s while infusing a contemporary production style.
Flat Earth’s musical journey began when Niclas Etelavuori parted ways with Amorphis due to a managerial conflict, prompting him to seek new artistic endeavors. Teaming up with Linde amidst the latter’s commitments with HIM, the duo embarked on crafting fresh compositions, later joined by Anthony, injecting renewed creativity into their collaboration.
The band’s initial recordings, including contributions from former HIM drummer Mika “Gas Lipstick” Karppinen and Anthony’s original composition, laid the groundwork for their debut album, “None For One,” released in 2018 to widespread acclaim. Subsequent releases like “High On Lies” showcased their evolution, delving deeper into lyrical complexities and intricate production techniques.
Flat Earth’s discography features standout singles such as the live cover of Nirvana’s “School,” the ethereal “Into The Blue,” the intense “Cyberain” with Wille Granö on drums, and the transformative “Holy,” signaling a shift in their sonic landscape while retaining their signature vigor.
Following the departure of founding drummer Gas Lipstick, the band underwent a lineup change, enlisting Mikko Herranen to take over drumming duties while contributing backing vocals and production insights, enriching their evolving sound.
With a lineup comprising Linde on guitar, Herranen on drums and backing vocals, Etelävuori on bass, and Anthony on vocals and guitar, Flat Earth continues to carve a distinct path in the Nordic rock scene, blending elements of nostalgia with contemporary sensibilities to create a compelling musical narrative.
As they forge ahead with their latest release, “1985,” Flat Earth remains a testament to the enduring creativity and collaborative spirit of musicians dedicated to pushing the boundaries of rock music and captivating audiences with their dynamic soundscapes.
