A History of Wolvennest

Wolvennest, also known as WLVNNST, is an experimental psychedelic black metal band hailing from Brussels, Belgium. Formed in 2015, the group has carved a unique niche in the metal scene by blending elements of black metal, ambient, and psychedelic music to create a distinctive sound that explores themes of occultism and rituals.

Formation and Early Years (2015–2016)

The inception of Wolvennest brought together seasoned musicians from various backgrounds. The founding lineup included guitarist Michel Kirby (associated with bands like Arkangel and Length of Time), guitarist Marc DeBacker (formerly of Mucky Pup and Dog Eat Dog), guitarist/bassist/keyboardist Corvus Von Burtle (also known as François Breulet, linked with Cult Of Erinyes), vocalist/keyboardist/thereminist Sharon “Shazzula” Schievers, bassist John Marx, and drummer Jason Van Gulick. This ensemble aimed to fuse their diverse musical influences into a cohesive and innovative sound.

In 2016, Wolvennest released their self-titled debut album, “WLVNNST,” in collaboration with Der Blutharsch and the Infinite Church of the Leading Hand. This release showcased their experimental approach, combining hypnotic guitar loops, repetitive beats, and dark ambient vocals to craft a ritualistic auditory experience.

Evolution and Subsequent Releases (2017–2021)

Following the departure of drummer Jason Van Gulick in 2017, Bram Moerenhout joined the band, solidifying the lineup that would drive their subsequent projects. In 2018, Wolvennest released “VOID,” an album that further delved into their signature blend of psychedelic and black metal elements, receiving critical acclaim for its atmospheric depth and innovative compositions.

The band’s evolution continued with the 2019 EP “Vortex,” which maintained their dark, immersive soundscapes. In 2021, they unveiled “Temple,” a nearly 80-minute opus that stands as a testament to their artistic growth. “Temple” was lauded for its hypnotic and immersive experience, with each track contributing to a cohesive and expansive musical journey.

The album features tracks like “Adversaries” and the sorrowful title track, which highlight the band’s ability to create haunting and spiritual musical experiences.

Throughout their career, Wolvennest has been associated with Ván Records, under which they have released their major works. Their music continues to explore dark, ritualistic themes, solidifying their place in the experimental and psychedelic black metal genre.

Wolvennest’s journey reflects a commitment to musical exploration and innovation, consistently pushing the boundaries of genre conventions to create profound and immersive auditory experiences.
