A History of The Black Keys

Formation and Early Years (2001–2006)

The Black Keys burst onto the music scene in 2001, hailing from Akron, Ohio. The duo, consisting of Dan Auerbach on guitar and vocals, and Patrick Carney on drums, began their journey as an independent act, honing their raw blues rock sound in basements and self-producing their records. Their debut album, The Big Come Up, released in 2002, marked the beginning of their rise to prominence in the garage rock revival of the 2000s.

After signing with Fat Possum Records, The Black Keys continued to build their underground fanbase through relentless touring, frequent album releases, and captivating music festival performances. After a few years away, The Black Keys made a triumphant return in 2019 with their ninth album, Let's Rock, showcasing their signature blues-infused rock sound. In 2021, they paid homage to Mississippi hill country blues with Delta Kream, before releasing original material with Dropout Boogie in 2022. The band continued to push boundaries and experiment with their sound, culminating in the release of their fourteenth album, Peaches!, in 2026.
