A History of Sepultura

Formation and Early Years (1984–1988)

Sepultura emerged from the depths of Belo Horizonte in 1984, founded by the Cavalera brothers, Max and Igor. With their debut album Morbid Visions in 1986, the band began to make waves in the Brazilian metal scene, paving the way for their future success.

It was their third album, Beneath the Remains, released in 1989, that truly put Sepultura on the international map. The raw power and relentless energy of tracks like 'Inner Self' and 'Stronger Than Hate' showcased the band's undeniable talent and set the stage for their domination of the metal world.

Golden Age and Mainstream Success (1991–1996)

The early 90s saw Sepultura reach new heights with iconic albums like Arise (1991) and Chaos A.D. (1993). These records solidified their reputation as one of the leading forces in heavy metal, blending thrash, groove, and death metal influences into a unique and powerful sound.

By the time Roots was unleashed upon the world in 1996, Sepultura had become a global phenomenon. The album's fusion of tribal rhythms, industrial elements, and pure aggression pushed boundaries and expanded the band's horizons, captivating audiences worldwide.

Lineup Changes and Evolution (1997–2006)

The departure of founding members Max and Igor Cavalera in 1997 and 2006 marked a significant shift for Sepultura. However, the band continued to evolve and thrive, with new frontman Derrick Green joining in 1997 and bringing his own dynamic energy to the group.

Despite lineup changes over the years, including the absence of any original members by 2006, Sepultura remained a powerhouse in the metal scene. Guitarist Andreas Kisser's unwavering presence and the band's fearless exploration of diverse musical influences kept them at the forefront of the genre.

Farewell Tour and End of an Era (2024–2026)

In March 2024, after more than four decades of relentless metal mayhem, Sepultura embarked on a two-year-long farewell tour. This monumental journey marked the end of an era for the band, as they prepared to bid farewell to their loyal fans and the music world at large.

As they released the EP The Cloud of Unknowing in 2026 to coincide with the final year of their tour, Sepultura's legacy was secured. Their impact on the metal scene, from their early thrash roots to their genre-defying later works, will continue to inspire generations of headbangers to come.
