A History of Kreator

Formation and Early Years (1982–1994)

Kreator burst onto the German thrash metal scene in 1982, with founding members Miland 'Mille' Petrozza and Jürgen 'Ventor' Reil leading the charge. Their early albums, including Pleasure to Kill (1986) and Terrible Certainty (1987), solidified their reputation as one of the most brutal and innovative bands in the genre.

Throughout the years, Kreator underwent several lineup changes, with bassists and lead guitarists coming and going. Despite these shifts, Petrozza and Reil remained the driving force behind the band. In 1994, Reil briefly left the group, only to return in 1996, ensuring the core of Kreator stayed intact.

Mainstream Success and Continued Innovation (1996–2017)

As the 90s progressed, Kreator continued to push boundaries with albums like Extreme Aggression (1989) and Coma of Souls (1990). While they were influential within the thrash metal community, it wasn't until the release of Phantom Antichrist (2012) and Gods of Violence (2017) that they achieved mainstream success.

These later albums showcased Kreator's evolution and maturity as a band, earning them chart-topping success in Germany and solidifying their status as one of the best-selling German thrash metal bands of all time.

Recent Years and Future (2019–2026)

In 2019, Kreator welcomed Frédéric Leclercq as their new bassist, replacing long-time member Christian 'Speesy' Giesler. With the addition of Leclercq and the steady presence of Petrozza, Reil, and lead guitarist Sami Yli-Sirniö, the band continued to push boundaries with their latest studio album, Krushers of the World, released in 2026.

Kreator's lasting legacy lies not only in their impressive discography but also in their influence on the thrash metal genre. Alongside bands like Destruction, Sodom, and Tankard, they are considered pioneers of German thrash metal, with a sound that has inspired countless bands and fans worldwide.
