A History of Kauan

Formation and Early Years (2005–2008)

In 2005, the atmospheric doom metal/post-rock powerhouse known as Kauan emerged from the depths of Chelyabinsk, Russia. Founded by Anton Belov, the band initially blended folk metal, black metal, and doom metal influences to create a unique sound.

With the addition of violinist Lyubov Mushnikova and guitarist Alexander Borovikh, Kauan released their debut album 'Lumikuuro' in 2007, showcasing their ability to seamlessly weave together haunting melodies and heavy riffs.

Evolution and Lineup Changes (2009–2013)

By 2009, Kauan had evolved their sound to incorporate ambient and post-rock elements, as seen in their album 'Aava tuulen maa'. The departure of Borovikh paved the way for a new musical direction, delving deeper into atmospheric neofolk and post-rock influences.

In 2011, the band released 'Kuu..', featuring a mesmerizing blend of post-rock and ambient soundscapes. Despite lineup changes, including the departure of Mushnikova, Kauan continued to push boundaries with their music.

Concept Albums and Critical Acclaim (2015–2021)

With the release of 'Sorni Nai' in 2015, Kauan delved into the mysterious Dyatlov Pass incident, showcasing their storytelling prowess through one continuous song divided into seven tracks. The band's seventh studio album, 'Kaiho', further solidified their reputation for crafting emotive and atmospheric music.

In 2021, Kauan released 'Ice Fleet', captivating listeners with their signature blend of doom metal, post-rock, and neofolk. The band also treated fans to live albums recorded during their performance in Kyiv, Ukraine, showcasing their raw energy and musicianship.

Relocation and Reinvention (2021–present)

In 2021, Kauan made the bold move to relocate to Finland, marking a new chapter in their musical journey. With a revamped lineup featuring bassist Niko Salminen, drummer Kristian Merilahti, and violist Helena Dumell, the band continues to captivate audiences with their ethereal soundscapes and emotive storytelling.

Their latest release, 'ATM Revised', sees Kauan reimagine their album 'Aava tuulen maa' with a fresh perspective, showcasing their commitment to innovation and musical exploration.
