A History of Dorso

Formation and Early Years (1984–1988)

Dorso emerged from the depths of Santiago, Chile in 1984, founded by the visionary Rodrigo Cuadra at the young age of 17. With a unique blend of extreme metal and progressive rock, the band drew inspiration from dark fantasy literature and gore films. Their first public performance in a Ñuñoa gym marked the beginning of a musical journey fueled by heavy metal covers and original compositions.

By the release of their debut demo, 'Parajes de lo Desconocido' in 1985, Dorso had evolved into a trio led by Cuadra, alongside new members Gamal Eltit on guitars and Jaime Palma on drums.

Golden Years and Lineup Changes (1989–1995)

In 1989, Dorso unleashed their first album, 'Bajo una luna cámbrica,' showcasing a fusion of prog rock-inspired thrash metal and traditional speed metal. The release of 'Romance' in 1990 elevated the band's status, with its symphonic and conceptual approach captivating fans worldwide.

After musical disagreements led to lineup changes, Dorso returned with a new formation featuring Marcelo Naves on drums and Alvaro Soms on guitar. The result was the band's best-selling album, 'El Espanto Surge de la Tumba' in 1993, known for its Spanglish lyrics and dark humor.

Evolution and Hiatus (1998–2008)

Following the success of 'Big Monsters Aventura' in 1995, Dorso continued to push boundaries with releases like 'Disco Blood' in 1998. The band explored new musical territories, incorporating elements of doom and black metal into their sound. After a brief hiatus, Dorso returned in 2008 with 'Espacium,' showcasing their evolution and continued impact on the metal scene.

With a storied history spanning over three decades, Dorso's legacy in the metal world is undeniable. From their early days of experimentation to their genre-defying albums, the band has left an indelible mark on the global metal community, inspiring generations of fans and musicians alike.
