DragonForce, the renowned metal band, has seen its fair share of changes over the years, with guitarist Herman Li shedding light on the band’s evolution during an interview on The Candid Mic With Fran Strine. Li, along with fellow founding guitarist Sam Totman, has been the driving force behind the band, adapting to lineup changes with a pragmatic perspective.
Li addressed the perception that DragonForce may have revolving members, emphasizing that transitions within the band are not fueled by drama but rather by natural circumstances. Drawing parallels to staffing changes in other industries, Li likened the band’s evolution to a tech company adjusting its team to optimize performance.
One significant shift for DragonForce came in 2018 when they decided to part ways with their traditional management structure. Li explained that they dismantled the existing business system to pave the way for a new approach that better suited the band’s needs and goals.
Interestingly, Li revealed that he had previously managed the band himself until the release of their breakthrough album, Inhuman Rampage, in 2005. The album’s success, propelled by the hit track Through the Fire and Flames featured in Guitar Hero, propelled DragonForce into the global spotlight, necessitating external management.
After experiencing the limitations of external management, Li took charge once again, leveraging his experience and insights to steer the band in a new direction. This shift in management proved beneficial, leading to a resurgence in DragonForce’s popularity and success.
Notably, the band’s enduring relevance is exemplified by the resurgence of Through the Fire and Flames, which found a new audience through its inclusion in the popular video game Fortnite. Li expressed enthusiasm over the song’s reception in the gaming community, highlighting DragonForce’s continued impact across different platforms.
As DragonForce continues to navigate the ever-changing music industry landscape, Li’s hands-on approach to management reflects a commitment to steering the band towards sustained growth and success. By embracing change and taking control of their destiny, DragonForce remains a force to be reckoned with in the metal scene.
