Gotsu Totsu Kotsu: Back From the Underworld – A Resurrection Reeking of Deathly Delights

Japan’s Gotsu Totsu Kotsu (translated as “violent, abrupt, and fractured bones”) return with their aptly titled “Back From the Underworld.” This ferocious five-year follow-up to their last album delivers a potent blend of technical death metal mastery and slam-infused brutality.

A Technical Onslaught

From the opening riffs of “Descent to Putrefaction,” it’s clear Gotsu Totsu Kotsu haven’t lost their touch. The drumming throughout the album is a whirlwind of blast beats and intricate fills, courtesy of drummer Kyohei. Guitarists Shinya and James unleash a torrent of technical riffs and solos, showcasing impressive dexterity without sacrificing sheer aggression.

The band’s technical prowess is further emphasized by the complex song structures. Tracks like “Obliterated by Putrid Stench” weave between lightning-fast passages and slower, groove-oriented sections, keeping the listener constantly engaged.

Slam by Default, Brutality by Design

While the technical aspects are impressive, Gotsu Totsu Kotsu doesn’t rely solely on them. The album is infused with the hallmarks of slam death metal – downtuned guitars, guttural vocals, and breakdowns that beg for mosh pits. However, their slam elements feel organic and purposeful, adding another layer of sonic brutality rather than being the sole focus.

Vocals by Tatsuhiro are monstrous. His growls are deep and guttural, perfectly conveying the album’s themes of death, decay, and the horrors of the underworld.

A Minor Misstep in the Underworld Maze

While “Back From the Underworld” is a strong album overall, a minor criticism lies with the vocal delivery. While undeniably powerful, Tatsuhiro’s growls lack some variation throughout the record. A touch more tonal diversity could have added another layer of depth to the listening experience.

A Must-Have for Death Metal Devotees

Despite this minor quibble, “Back From the Underworld” is a triumph for Gotsu Totsu Kotsu. It’s a brutal, technically impressive, and utterly satisfying death metal record. Fans of bands like Dying Fetus and Cannibal Corpse will find much to love here. Gotsu Totsu Kotsu has proven that their return from the underworld is a welcome one, reminding us why they remain a force to be reckoned with in the world of extreme metal.
