California’s doom metal scene gets a new inhabitant with the arrival of Sacramento’s Oromet and their self-titled debut album, released in June 2023. Formed by members of other bands in the local scene, Oromet brings together atmospheric elements with the crushing weight of doom metal, creating a soundscape that is both beautiful and devastating.
The album consists of just three tracks, with the epic “Familiar Spirits” clocking in at a mammoth 22 minutes. The song starts with a simple melody before steadily building into a powerful sonic tapestry. Layering guitars weave a melancholic spell, punctuated by thunderous drums and subtle choral synths that add a touch of grandeur. No element overstays its welcome, with the melodies constantly evolving and keeping the listener engaged throughout the extended journey.
The remaining tracks, “Diluvium” and “Alpenglow,” maintain the high quality established in the opener. “Diluvium” offers a slightly more stripped-down approach, while “Alpenglow” brings the album to a close with a sense of melancholic beauty.
“Oromet” is a strong debut from a band with a clear vision and the talent to execute it. Fans of atmospheric and doom metal should definitely check this one out.
