American death metal veterans Dying Fetus returned in 2023 with their ninth studio album, “Make Them Beg for Death,” solidifying their reputation for unrelenting brutality. Released on September 8th by Relapse Records, the album delivers exactly what fans expect: a savage onslaught of technical riffs, gut-churning vocals, and punishing blast beats.
Recorded in Baltimore with longtime producer Steve Wright (Future Islands) and mixed by Mark Lewis (Cannibal Corpse), “Make Them Beg for Death” boasts the band’s signature sound. Co-vocalist/guitarist John Gallagher describes it as “catchy riffs and memorable” while drummer Trey Williams emphasizes their focus on “savage beatdowns.” Tracks like “Compulsion for Cruelty” showcase this perfectly, blending technical flourishes with headbang-inducing grooves.
The album isn’t reinventing the wheel, which some reviewers saw as a shortcoming. However, Dying Fetus isn’t aiming for groundbreaking innovation. Instead, they’re doubling down on their strengths, delivering a potent dose of pure death metal mayhem. As Angry Metal Guy puts it, “Make Them Beg for Death” might not be their magnum opus, but it’s “a hell of a good time regardless.”
For fans of Dying Fetus and brutal death metal in general, “Make Them Beg for Death” is a must-listen. It’s a pummeling display of musical prowess and unadulterated aggression. Just be prepared to have your neck whipped around in a frenzy.
