Iced Earth guitarist Jon Schaffer recently gave his first interview since his arrest for involvement in the 2021 US Capitol riot. The interview, titled “Jon Schaffer – Finally Free,” was conducted by the church-affiliated podcast “It Is Later Than You Think.” During the extensive conversation, Schaffer discussed his participation in the insurrection, his newfound Christian faith, and the potential return to music as a way to honor God.
Schaffer, who initially faced multiple charges, spent three months in detention after being identified in security footage breaching the Capitol building on January 6th, 2021. Despite being linked to the far-right group the Oath Keepers, Schaffer’s cooperation with authorities led to a plea deal. He pleaded guilty to obstruction of an official proceeding of Congress and trespassing on restricted Capitol grounds while armed with bear spray. In October 2024, Schaffer received a three-year probation, a fine, and community service.
In his post-sentencing statement and subsequent interview, Schaffer expressed remorse for his actions during the riot. He acknowledged his emotional response and the influence of external factors that led to his involvement in the chaotic events. Reflecting on the day, Schaffer described feeling caught up in the moment and emphasized that the violence he witnessed contradicted the peaceful intentions of the movement.
Despite receiving a pardon along with other Capitol rioters, Schaffer believes that they faced unjust treatment and political persecution. He highlighted the lasting damage caused by the events and the toll it took on individuals involved, including fatalities and suicides. Schaffer’s experience during his brief jail term led him to embrace Christianity, viewing his baptism as a spiritual renewal.
Looking ahead, Schaffer hinted at a potential return to music, aligning with his newfound faith. He expressed a desire for any future musical endeavors to be authentic and uplifting, aiming to create content that reflects his Christian beliefs. Schaffer emphasized the importance of artistic integrity and the desire for his work to inspire and resonate with audiences.
Following the interview, Schaffer’s fans await his musical comeback, hopeful that his creative output will reflect his personal growth and faith journey. As he navigates this new chapter post-riot, Schaffer’s story serves as a testament to redemption and transformation, showcasing the power of introspection and spiritual awakening in the face of adversity.
