Epica, the symphonic metal band, has been busy preparing for their upcoming ninth album. Despite the four-year gap since their last release, the band has kept themselves occupied with various projects, including a lockdown livestream and a guest star-filled EP called The Alchemy Project.
During their break, they toured extensively, collaborated with Metallica, and marked their 20th anniversary. Lead singer Simone Simons even released a solo album titled Vermillion. However, she expresses that returning to the studio with Epica holds a special allure.
Simons mentions how she manages to differentiate her ideas for her solo work and Epica’s music. While her solo album delves into themes inspired by the color red, encompassing love, hate, life, and death, her collaboration with Epica explores spiritual and esoteric topics, shared with guitarist Mark Jansen.
The upcoming album, described as the band’s most spiritual yet, incorporates elements of renewal and reincarnation. Simons hints at a darker fantasy theme with a spooky touch, reflecting the band’s evolution and personal growth, especially since Mark Jansen became a parent.
While Epica’s solo projects featured guest appearances, the new album will solely showcase the talents of the orchestra and choir. The band recently performed a show called ‘Symphonic Synergy’ with live orchestral accompaniment, which added a magical dimension to their music.
Despite the influence of the live orchestral performance, Simons confirms that the album’s sound had been finalized before the show. She elaborates on the complexity of the upcoming record, combining classic Epica elements with modern twists, maintaining a balance between familiarity and innovation.
The album’s themes of renewal and reinvention resonate with the band’s reflections on personal and artistic growth. Simons explains how their music and lyrics serve as a form of therapy, allowing them to process emotions and experiences, emphasizing the importance of evolution and self-discovery.
Epica’s ninth album, set for release in 2025 via Nuclear Blast, promises to be a compelling blend of their signature symphonic metal sound with fresh elements. The band’s journey of introspection and transformation is reflected in their music, offering listeners a glimpse into their evolving artistic vision.
As fans eagerly await the release of Epica’s latest offering, the band’s dedication to pushing boundaries and exploring new horizons ensures that their music continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
