An Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft operating on behalf of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s government met a disastrous fate on 17 November 2025. The plane was destroyed in a fiery incident following a crash-landing at Kolwezi Airport in the southern region of the country. Despite the severity of the crash, all 29 individuals on board, including 26 passengers and three crew members, managed to escape unharmed.
The ill-fated aircraft, registered as D2-AJB and constructed in 2001, was on a mission to transport a delegation from the Ministry of Mines. The delegation was en route to Kolwezi for a crucial meeting with local authorities concerning an incident at the Kalando mining site. The flight, designated as MBC100, originated from Kinshasa with a layover in Lubumbashi before the tragic events unfolded.
As the ERJ-145 approached Kolwezi’s runway 29, reports indicated that it landed short of the designated threshold. Notably, airport authorities had issued a notice to airmen (NOTAM) advising about the closure of the initial 1,000 meters of the runway for resurfacing works, leaving only 1,500 meters for landing. The aircraft made contact with the ground before reaching the temporary threshold, leading to the failure of both main landing gear assemblies.
Subsequently, the plane skidded for several hundred meters before veering off the left side of the runway and coming to a halt at an angle. A fire broke out post-impact, engulfing the aircraft and resulting in its destruction. Videos captured the dramatic landing and the evacuation of occupants from the burning wreckage, while images portrayed the aftermath of the incident with the aircraft charred and in ruins.

Despite the devastating outcome, all passengers and crew managed to evacuate the aircraft unassisted before the flames consumed the fuselage. Local emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, although the aircraft was deemed a total loss. An investigation has been launched by authorities in the DRC to unravel the circumstances leading to the crash.
According to information from Planespotters.net, the ERJ-145 was the sole aircraft of its kind in Airjet Angola’s fleet. The carrier also operated an aging Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia and two elderly British Aerospace Jetstream 41s. The loss of the ERJ-145 marks a significant blow to the airline’s fleet and operations.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks associated with air travel and the critical importance of safety protocols and training in mitigating such catastrophic events. As investigations into the crash unfold, the aviation industry will be closely monitoring the findings to enhance safety measures and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
