Deicide: Still Spewing Venom on “Banished By Sin”

Floridian death metal veterans Deicide return with their 13th studio album, “Banished By Sin,” a release that proves they haven’t mellowed with age. If anything, they’ve gotten even more blasphemous.

Deicide has always been a band known for their uncompromising brutality and anti-Christian lyrics. “Banished By Sin” doesn’t deviate from this formula. Songs like “Bury The Cross…With Your Christ” and “Failures Of Your Dying Lord” leave no doubt about the band’s stance on religion, delivered with Glen Benton’s signature guttural roar.

Musically, “Banished By Sin” is a solid, if not particularly groundbreaking, entry in Deicide’s catalog. The churning guitars, blast beats, and demonic vocals are all present and accounted for. Each of the four band members contributes songwriting to the album, resulting in a nice diversity in tempos and riffs. Tracks like “Sever The Tongue” showcase the band’s ability to weave technicality into their bludgeoning sound, while “From Unknown Heights You Shall Fall” delivers a more straightforward onslaught.

There’s a certain comfort in the familiarity of “Banished By Sin.” Fans who loved albums like “Deicide” and “Legion” will find plenty to enjoy here. However, the lack of innovation might leave some listeners feeling like they’ve heard it all before. The production, while clean, lacks the raw aggression of some of the band’s earlier work.

Despite these minor shortcomings, “Banished By Sin” is a worthy addition to Deicide’s discography. It’s a potent reminder of why they remain one of the most important bands in death metal. It’s not for the faint of heart, but for those who crave pure sonic violence and anti-religious vitriol, “Banished By Sin” delivers the goods in spades.
