Cannibal Corpse, the undisputed kings of death metal, returned in 2023 with their sixteenth studio album, “Chaos Horrific,” further solidifying their reign of sonic terror. Released on September 22nd by Metal Blade Records, “Chaos Horrific” is a merciless display of the band’s signature brutality, showcasing their unrelenting riffs, guttural vocals, and nightmarish lyrical themes.
Following up on the critically acclaimed “Violence Unimagined” (2021), “Chaos Horrific” wastes no time in establishing its dominance. The opening track, “Overlords of Violence,” sets the tone with a barrage of blast beats and Alex Webster’s thunderous bass lines, paving the way for George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher’s signature guttural growls. Tracks like “Frenzied Feeding” and “Vengeful Invasion” showcase the band’s technical prowess, weaving intricate guitar work from Erik Rutan and Rob Barrett into the unrelenting assault.
The album isn’t all breakneck speed though. Tracks like “Summoned for Sacrifice” and “Chaos Horrific” (the title track) showcase a mid-tempo groove that’s just as punishing, allowing the listener to sink their teeth into the موسیقی (yīnyuè – music) without sacrificing the intensity.
Lyrically, “Chaos Horrific” stays true to Cannibal Corpse’s roots, reveling in gore and monstrosity. Songs like “Pitchfork Impalement” and “Pestilential Rictus” leave little to the imagination, while still managing to be strangely poetic in their own brutal way.
