India’s folk-metal band, Bloodywood, has made history by becoming the first metal band in the country to collaborate with the renowned Japanese kawaii metal band, Babymetal. This groundbreaking collaboration took place for Bloodywood’s second album, Nu Delhi, which explores a wide range of themes from politics to social influencers.
The Japanese band, Babymetal, comprising Suzuka Nakamoto, Moa Kikuchi, and Momoko Okazaki, is credited with pioneering the kawaii metal genre, fusing elements of heavy metal and J-pop. In a significant move, Babymetal’s producer attended one of Bloodywood’s concerts in Tokyo in 2023, sparking the beginning of this unique musical partnership.
Speaking on the collaboration, Jayant Bhadula from Bloodywood shared that the idea to work with Babymetal came about organically during the creation of their song ‘Bekhauf’. The collaboration seamlessly integrated Babymetal’s vocals into the track, showcasing the band’s innovative approach to music-making.
Having started as a parody band in 2016, Bloodywood gained prominence in 2018 with hit singles like ‘Ari Ari’ and ‘Jee Veerey’. Their debut album, Rakshak, released in 2022, received critical acclaim for its poignant lyrics addressing societal issues such as mental health and bullying.
The band’s latest album, Nu Delhi, continues their tradition of thought-provoking lyrics. Tracks like ‘Halla Bol’ and ‘Daggebaaz’ delve into themes of resilience, societal pressures, and the culture of idol worship. The album showcases Bloodywood’s evolution as a band that creates music with a purpose.
One standout track from the album, ‘Nu Delhi’, serves as a tribute to the city where the band originated. ‘Kismat’ and ‘Bekhauf’ are other tracks that explore themes of childhood struggles and overcoming fears, respectively, adding depth and diversity to the album’s narrative.
With a blend of traditional Indian instruments like dhol, sarangi, tumbi, and modern recording equipment, Bloodywood’s sound is a unique fusion of cultural influences. Their collaboration with Babymetal signifies a cross-cultural exchange that transcends musical boundaries.
Looking ahead, Bloodywood has announced another collaboration with Babymetal for a song titled ‘Kon! kon!’ featured on Babymetal’s upcoming album, Metal Forth. This collaboration underscores the band’s commitment to pushing creative boundaries and exploring new musical horizons.
As fans eagerly await the release of the new album and the continuation of this groundbreaking collaboration, Bloodywood’s innovative approach to metal music is sure to captivate audiences worldwide. The album Nu Delhi is now available for streaming on various online platforms, with CDs and vinyl records also on sale for music enthusiasts to enjoy.
