A History of Nightwish

Formation and Early Years (1996–1997)

Nightwish, the iconic Finnish symphonic metal band, was born in 1996 when lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen joined forces with guitarist Emppu Vuorinen and former lead singer Tarja Turunen. The addition of drummer Jukka Nevalainen and bassist Sami Vänskä solidified the lineup, leading to the release of their debut album, Angels Fall First, in 1997.

With their unique blend of symphonic elements and metal, Nightwish quickly gained recognition in their home country. However, it wasn't until their subsequent albums, Oceanborn (1998), Wishmaster (2000), and Century Child (2002), that the band truly began to make waves in the international metal scene.

Turunen's Departure and New Beginnings (2004–2007)

Nightwish's breakthrough came with their 2004 album, Once, which sold over a million copies worldwide and marked their entry into the US market. Hits like 'Wish I Had an Angel' received widespread acclaim and solidified the band's place in metal history. However, turmoil struck in 2005 with Turunen's dismissal, leading to the introduction of Anette Olzon as the new lead vocalist in 2007.

The release of Dark Passion Play in 2007, with Olzon at the helm, further cemented Nightwish's status as a powerhouse in the symphonic metal genre. The album's lead single, 'Amaranth', became a fan favorite and showcased the band's evolution and resilience in the face of adversity.

Lineup Changes and Continued Success (2011–2013)

Nightwish continued to push boundaries with their seventh studio album, Imaginaerum, released in 2011. Despite parting ways with Olzon in 2012, the band found a new star in Floor Jansen, who became a permanent member alongside Troy Donockley. This lineup shift brought a renewed energy and creativity to Nightwish, captivating audiences worldwide.

In 2013, Nightwish solidified their lineup with Jansen and Donockley, setting the stage for a new chapter in their storied career. The band's resilience and dedication to their craft ensured that their legacy would endure, inspiring countless metal fans and musicians alike.
