A History of Miserere Luminis

Miserere Luminis is a Canadian atmospheric black metal band formed in 2008 as a collaboration between members of two prominent acts from Quebec’s underground metal scene: Gris and Sombres Forêts. The lineup features Neptune (guitar, bass, piano, saxophone, lyrics) and Icare (drums, vocals, strings) from Gris, alongside Annatar (guitar, vocals) from Sombres Forêts. Their music is characterized by melancholic melodies, atmospheric soundscapes, and themes exploring sadness and darkness.

Formation and Debut Album (2008–2009)

The inception of Miserere Luminis in 2008 marked a significant event in the Métal Noir Québécois movement. The collaboration between Gris and Sombres Forêts aimed to blend their distinct styles into a unified musical expression. This partnership culminated in the release of their self-titled debut album, “Miserere Luminis,” on November 3, 2009, through Sepulchral Productions. The album featured tracks like “Le mal des siècles” and “Ciel tragique,” showcasing a fusion of bleak mid-tempo soundscapes with dreamlike, dissonant elements, creating a unique atmospheric black metal experience.

Live Performances and Hiatus (2009–2018)

Following the album’s release, Miserere Luminis performed select live shows, donning dramatic golden theater masks to enhance the theatrical aspect of their performances. These appearances included tours and one-off shows, notably at the Messe Des Morts Festival in 2018. After these performances, the band entered a prolonged hiatus, with members focusing on their primary projects, Gris and Sombres Forêts.

Reformation and “Ordalie” (2018–2023)

In late 2018, Miserere Luminis reunited to work on new material, leading to the creation of their second album, “Ordalie.” Released on June 23, 2023, through Sepulchral Productions, “Ordalie” marked the band’s return after a 14-year absence. The album comprises five tracks, including “Noir fauve” and “Le sang des rêves,” and spans nearly 45 minutes. It continues the band’s tradition of atmospheric black metal, enriched with years of maturation and a more elaborate production. The music on “Ordalie” is described as dark and powerful, with a wild and heart-wrenching character that delves into existential and aesthetic transcendence.
