Norwegian thrashers Inculter return with their third studio album, “Morbid Origin,” a potent offering that wastes no time reminding listeners why they’re torchbearers of the genre’s old-school spirit. Released in December 2023, the album is a riff-fueled frenzy, drawing inspiration from thrash metal’s golden age while injecting a modern edge.
Inculter doesn’t stray far from the classic thrash formula. Fans of Slayer, Exodus, and early Metallica will find themselves right at home with the album’s relentless energy, galloping rhythms, and scorching guitar work. Tracks like “Death Reigns” showcase this perfectly, with a pummeling main riff that begs for headbanging and a powerful chorus that stays lodged in your head.
However, “Morbid Origin” isn’t just a nostalgia trip. Inculter demonstrates a knack for crafting compelling song structures that avoid predictability. The title track, the album’s longest, is a prime example. Clocking in at over eight minutes, it takes the listener on a journey through thrashy onslaughts, unexpected tempo changes, and even a surprising acoustic outro. This willingness to experiment keeps the album fresh and engaging.
Vocally, Remi Andre Nygard delivers a raw and aggressive performance that perfectly complements the music’s intensity. Comparisons to Slayer’s Tom Araya are inevitable, but Nygard injects his own ferocity into the mix. The rhythm section, anchored by bassist Vegard Sverre Tveit and drummer Øyvind Heier, provides a rock-solid foundation that propels the music forward with relentless momentum.
While “Morbid Origin” is a strong effort overall, a few minor stumbles prevent it from achieving absolute greatness. Some songs, like “Age of Reprisal,” flirt with dragging their feet due to mid-tempo sections that lack the bite of the album’s faster moments. Additionally, the production, while raw and fitting for the genre, might feel a bit unpolished for some listeners accustomed to a more modern sound.
Despite these minor shortcomings, “Morbid Origin” remains a thrilling and enjoyable thrash metal experience. Inculter proves their ability to capture the essence of what made thrash metal so electrifying in the first place, while adding their own unique touches. This album is a must-listen for fans of classic thrash and a strong recommendation for anyone seeking a dose of pure, unadulterated aggression.
