Voice of Baceprot, an Indonesian metal band, has made history by becoming the first Indonesian band to perform at the prestigious Glastonbury music festival in the UK. The band, consisting of three devoutly Muslim women from a conservative town in West Java, has been challenging stereotypes and misconceptions through their unique blend of thrash metal music.
Formed in 2014, Voice of Baceprot, known as VOB, draws inspiration from iconic metal bands like System of a Down, Metallica, and Slipknot. Their lyrics touch on political issues such as climate change, peace, and misogyny, reflecting their commitment to addressing social issues through their music.
Despite facing discrimination and violence, including being labeled as “hell-bound” by conservative groups, the band has remained steadfast in their mission to break barriers in the male-dominated metal genre and defy societal expectations. They have opted for independence in their music career, rejecting the industry’s pressure to conform to traditional norms and standards.
One of their notable singles, “God, Allow Me (Please) to Play Music,” was a response to the backlash they received for their music, emphasizing their unwavering dedication to their craft regardless of criticism. Through their music, they advocate for women’s autonomy and empowerment, actively supporting campaigns against violence towards women.
Voice of Baceprot’s fusion of metal music with their Islamic faith has helped challenge stereotypes about Islam, showcasing a different narrative that emphasizes tolerance, peace, and equality. By performing in hijabs, they aim to challenge Western perceptions of Islam and demonstrate that Muslims are not monolithic in their beliefs and practices.
The band’s upcoming performance at Glastonbury signifies a significant milestone in their career, highlighting their global recognition and influence in the music industry. Their journey from a small town in Indonesia to international stages exemplifies their resilience and determination to make a mark in the world of metal music.
As they continue to inspire other Muslim women to defy societal norms and pursue their passions, Voice of Baceprot’s message of empowerment and social change resonates beyond the boundaries of music, making them a symbol of courage and creativity in the face of adversity.
