Early Days: Seeds of a Metal Monolith (1978-1984)
Ascension’s journey began in the late 1970s in the burgeoning heavy metal scene of Birmingham, England. Fueled by the burgeoning popularity of bands like Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, a group of teenagers – guitarist Mark “Maelstrom” Harris, bassist Daniel “Demolisher” Davies, and drummer Thomas “Thunder” Bailey – formed Ascension in 1978.
Their early years were spent honing their craft, playing local gigs in dingy pubs and community halls. Their sound, a potent blend of classic heavy metal with touches of NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal), quickly garnered a loyal following.
In 1982, a pivotal moment arrived. Their electrifying performance at the legendary “Metal Mayhem” festival in Birmingham caught the attention of a young vocalist named Sarah “Siren” Blackwood. Her powerful voice, imbued with a raw yet melodic quality, perfectly complemented Ascension’s heavy sound. Sarah joined the band, solidifying their lineup and propelling them towards a new level of intensity.
A Meteoric Rise and the Power of “Fire and Fury” (1984-1988)
With Sarah on board, Ascension entered the studio in 1984 to record their debut album, “Fire and Fury.” This album became a cornerstone of the NWOBHM movement. Tracks like “Iron Maiden” (not to be confused with the Iron Maiden song of the same name), “Metal Messiah,” and the title track showcased their soaring guitar work, thunderous rhythm section, and Sarah’s captivating vocals.
“Fire and Fury” received critical acclaim for its raw energy and infectious hooks. The album propelled Ascension onto the national stage, landing them coveted opening slots for established metal acts like Saxon and Motörhead.
Their meteoric rise continued with the release of their sophomore album, “Screaming for Vengeance” (1986). This album saw a slight shift towards a more polished sound, incorporating elements of thrash metal. The album solidified their position as a force to be reckoned with in the ever-evolving metal landscape.
Internal Turmoil and a Change in Direction (1988-1992)
Despite their success, tensions began to rise within Ascension. The grueling touring schedule and creative differences led to the departure of Sarah in 1988. Her absence left a significant void, and the band struggled to recapture the magic of their earlier work.
They recruited a new vocalist, a more traditional heavy metal singer named Michael “Ironclad” Steele, and released the album “Gates of Oblivion” in 1990. While commercially successful, the album lacked the raw energy and originality that defined their earlier work.
The internal discord culminated in the departure of Demolisher in 1992. Without their founding bassist, Ascension decided to call it quits.
Reunion, Tragedy, and a Legacy Enshrined (1998-Present)
In 1998, fueled by nostalgia and a surge in interest in classic metal, the surviving members of Ascension decided to reunite. They recruited a new bassist and embarked on a successful European tour.
However, tragedy struck in 2002 with the sudden passing of Mark “Maelstrom” Harris. This loss was a devastating blow, and the band once again went on hiatus.
Despite Mark’s passing, Ascension’s legacy remained strong. Their early albums continued to be revered by metalheads, and their influence on countless heavy metal bands became undeniable.
In 2018, a special tribute concert was held in Birmingham to celebrate Mark’s life and Ascension’s musical contributions. The overwhelming response from fans reignited a spark within the remaining members.
With a renewed sense of purpose and a determination to honor Mark’s memory, Ascension decided to carry on. They recruited a new guitarist and began working on new material. In 2023, to the delight of fans, they released their first studio album in over 30 years, titled “Ashes to Flames.”
