A History of Ghost (Ghost B.C.)

Emerging from the shadows of Linköping, Sweden in 2006, Ghost isn’t your typical metal band. They’re a theatrical spectacle, a musical conjuring, and a masterfully crafted enigma. Led by the enigmatic Tobias Forge, Ghost has taken the metal world by storm with their captivating blend of heavy riffs, catchy hooks, and a healthy dose of theatricality.

Formative Years and Opus Eponymous (2006-2011)

The story begins with Forge, a musician with a penchant for the dark and dramatic. Inspired by a heavy metal riff he deemed “the most heavy metal riff that has ever existed,” he penned the song “Stand by Him,” laying the foundation for Ghost’s signature sound. Teaming up with former bandmate Gustaf Lindström, Forge started crafting a musical identity that went beyond just music.

The concept of a band as a theatrical entity, complete with a lead singer embodying a character, took root. Enter Papa Emeritus I, an enigmatic devil-pope clad in papal robes and a skeletal mask. Shrouded in anonymity, the Nameless Ghouls, a group of identically dressed instrumentalists, completed the visual tapestry.

In 2008, Ghost unleashed their debut album, Opus Eponymous. A potent cocktail of heavy metal riffs, catchy melodies, and Forge’s operatic vocals, the album dealt with themes of Satanism and anti-religion, delivered with a theatrical flair that set them apart. Tracks like “Ritual” and “Elizabeth” gained traction online, building a devoted fanbase hungry for more.

Evolving Papacy and Mainstream Success (2010-2017)

Despite the anonymity, rumors about Forge’s identity swirled. However, Ghost’s focus remained firmly on the music and the theatrical experience. Refusing to be pigeonholed as just another black metal band, Ghost incorporated elements of pop and 70s rock into their sound, creating a unique sonic identity.

Infestissumam (2013) marked a turning point. The album, featuring the hit single “Year Zero,” showcased a more polished sound and propelled them into the mainstream. Papa Emeritus I “died” on stage, paving the way for Papa Emeritus II, a seemingly younger and more flamboyant version of the character.

This cycle of death and rebirth became a recurring theme. Meliora (2015) arrived with Papa Emeritus III, a more charismatic and theatrical leader. Singles like the Grammy-winning “Square Hammer” cemented their place in the metal pantheon, achieving critical and commercial acclaim.

Unveiling the Clergy and a New Era (2017-Present)

The carefully constructed facade began to crumble in 2017. A legal battle with former band members exposed Forge’s identity, forcing him to acknowledge his role as the mastermind behind Ghost. However, the music remained the priority.

Taking the opportunity to shake things up, Ghost killed off Papa Emeritus III in a dramatic on-stage performance. In his place rose Papa Emeritus Zero, later revealed to be Papa Nihil, an even older and more sinister character, supposedly the founder of the clergy.

Prequelle (2018) marked a shift in the lore, abandoning the Papa Emeritus lineage for a new character – Cardinal Copia, a younger and seemingly less experienced leader. The album explored themes of plague and societal collapse, delivered with Ghost’s signature theatricality.

The latest chapter unfolded with 2021’s Impera. Cardinal Copia ascended to become Papa Emeritus IV, a flamboyant and rock n’ roll-inspired leader. The album delved deeper into the established lore while showcasing a more diverse musical palette, incorporating elements of disco and glam rock.

A Legacy of Spectacle and Song

Ghost’s legacy extends beyond their music. Their meticulously crafted theatrics elevate their live shows to the level of rock operas. The anonymity of the ghouls, the evolving characters, and the overarching narrative create a unique and immersive experience for fans.

Despite the recent shift away from the Papa Emeritus characters, Ghost’s theatrical core remains. With Impera achieving critical and commercial success, Ghost continues to push boundaries and captivate audiences. Their ability to blend musical genres with a captivating storyline ensures their place as one of the most unique and exciting bands in modern metal.
