Iron Monkey: The Rise and Fall of the Sludge Metal Pioneers
Formed in Nottingham, England in 1994, Iron Monkey quickly made a name for themselves as pioneers of the sludge metal genre. With their ferocious sound, relentless aggression, and uncompromising attitude, the band carved out a unique place for themselves in the metal scene of the 1990s.
The original lineup of Iron Monkey consisted of vocalist Johnny Morrow, guitarist Jim Rushby, bassist Doug Dalziel, and drummer Justin Greaves. Drawing influence from bands like Eyehategod, Grief, and Buzzov*en, Iron Monkey created a sound that was heavy, abrasive, and raw. Their music was characterized by downtuned guitars, thunderous bass lines, and Morrow’s guttural, tortured vocals.
In 1996, Iron Monkey released their debut album, “Iron Monkey,” on Earache Records. The album was a brutal onslaught of noise, filled with crushing riffs, pummeling drums, and lyrics that delved into themes of despair, addiction, and nihilism. Tracks like “666 Pack” and “Fink Dial” showcased the band’s ability to create a sonic hurricane of aggression and angst.
The success of their debut album helped Iron Monkey build a loyal following in the underground metal scene. The remaining members of the band continued to make music, with Jim Rushby joining the band Geriatric Unit and Justin Greaves founding the band Crippled Black Phoenix.
In 2017, Iron Monkey announced their reunion, with Rushby and Greaves joined by new members Scott Briggs on drums and Steve Watson on bass. The band embarked on a successful tour, playing to sold-out crowds and rekindling interest in their influential back catalog.
Today, Iron Monkey continues to be celebrated as one of the pioneers of the sludge metal genre. Their uncompromising sound, ferocious energy, and raw intensity have left an indelible mark on the metal scene, inspiring a new generation of bands to push the boundaries of heaviness and aggression.
