Swedish black metal veterans Marduk unleashed their fifteenth studio album, “Memento Mori,” in September 2023. The title, a Latin phrase translating to “remember you must die,” sets the tone for this offering – a potent exploration of mortality and oblivion.
“Memento Mori” doesn’t stray far from Marduk’s signature sound. Blazing riffs, Daniel Rostén’s venomous rasps, and a relentless percussive assault define the album. Tracks like “Blood of the Funeral” and “Year of the Maggot” showcase the band’s ability to weave breakneck speed with atmosphere, creating a sense of horrifying descent.
However, “Memento Mori” isn’t simply a rehash of past glories. Slower tempos on songs like “Shovel Beats Sceptre” and “Marching Bones” add a layer of oppressive dread, while the inclusion of the late LG Petrov (vocals) on the closing track “Death Becomes All” provides a poignant touchstone to the band’s history.
According to Marduk vocalist and songwriter Daniel Rostén, the album represents a “bold leap forward” while acknowledging the band’s legacy. “Memento Mori” maintains the ferocious energy that Marduk is known for, but also injects a newfound depth and atmosphere.
Critical reception for the album has been largely positive. Reviewers praise the album’s intensity and its ability to capture the essence of black metal’s grim themes. While some find the record a touch derivative, most agree that “Memento Mori” is a worthy addition to Marduk’s impressive discography.
Whether you’re a longtime Marduk devotee or a newcomer to the world of black metal, “Memento Mori” is a powerful and uncompromising listen. It’s a stark reminder of life’s impermanence, delivered with a cold fury that’s both horrifying and strangely exhilarating.
