Demoniac Unleashes Darkness with “Nube Negra”

Chilean thrashers Demoniac return with their third album, “Nube Negra” (Spanish for “Dark Cloud”), a release that promises to be their darkest and most aggressive yet. Released in September 2023, the album marks a continuation of the band’s evolution, incorporating fresh elements alongside their signature thrash attack.

“Nube Negra” boasts eight tracks clocking in at around 41 minutes, a classic thrash runtime. Reviews point out the album’s technical proficiency, with “razor-sharp riffs and virtuosic passages” scattered throughout [Angry Metal Guy]. However, some critics find the flow disjointed, with jarring transitions between certain tracks [Angry Metal Guy].

The opening track of the same name sets the tone for the album. It begins with a slow build-up featuring rolling thunder and acoustic guitar, perfectly capturing the essence of a gathering dark cloud. This quickly explodes into a storm of thrashing riffs, pounding drums, and venomous vocals delivered in Spanish.

One of the interesting aspects of “Nube Negra” is the band’s experimentation with unconventional instruments. Tracks feature clarinet, accordion, and synthesizers, adding a unique flavor to the thrash assault. While some may find this a curious choice for the genre, it injects a fresh layer of sound that complements the band’s established style.

Lyrically, “Nube Negra” delves into themes of hatred, negativity, and societal ills. The Spanish vocals deliver these messages with an appropriate level of fury, further amplifying the album’s aggressive nature.

Despite some criticisms regarding flow, “Nube Negra” is undeniably a well-performed album. The musicianship is tight, the songwriting is solid, and the experimentation with instrumentation adds a layer of intrigue. For fans of pure, unadulterated thrash metal, Demoniac’s latest offering is a must-listen. However, those seeking a more cohesive listening experience or a more traditional thrash sound may find themselves wanting a bit more.
