Max Cavalera, a founding member of Sepultura, recently shared the valuable advice he received from Ozzy Osbourne after his departure from the band in 1997. Having co-founded Sepultura in 1984 with his brother Igor, Cavalera left the band due to a management dispute with his bandmates, who were under the management of Cavalera’s wife, Gloria, at the time.
In a candid interview before the Louder Than Life festival, where the Cavalera brothers were set to perform Sepultura’s Chaos A.D. album, Max recounted the impactful conversation he had with Ozzy Osbourne in 1997. Reflecting on his departure from Sepultura, Cavalera shared how Ozzy’s words of encouragement resonated with him, drawing parallels between their experiences of leaving bands they had helped create.
Recalling Ozzy’s supportive words to “get back on the horse” and “go to war,” Cavalera found newfound inspiration to forge his path by launching Soulfly. This pivotal moment, guided by Ozzy’s advice, fueled Cavalera’s determination to pursue his musical journey independently, embodying a warrior spirit ready to face new challenges.
Despite the departure from Sepultura, Cavalera’s admiration for Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne remained unwavering. The profound influence of Black Sabbath’s music on Sepultura was evident in their 1996 album “Roots,” with the track “Roots Bloody Roots” paying homage to Black Sabbath’s classic “Sabbath Bloody Sabbath.”
Adding another layer to the narrative, Cavalera’s deep appreciation for Black Sabbath’s music was showcased through Sepultura’s cover of “Symptom of the Universe,” a track included in the remastered version of Chaos A.D. Cavalera’s reverence for Tony Iommi’s guitar work was palpable as he described the experience of interpreting such iconic music as both daunting and exhilarating.
As Max Cavalera and his band Soulfly gear up for the release of their 13th studio album, “Chama,” scheduled for October 24, the metal icon continues to honor his musical roots while venturing into new creative territories. With a headlining U.S. tour featuring special guest Fear Factory, Cavalera’s musical journey stands as a testament to resilience, growth, and unwavering dedication to his craft.
Through his collaborations, projects, and live performances, Max Cavalera embodies the essence of a true metal pioneer, drawing inspiration from the past while fearlessly carving out a unique path forward. As he takes the stage at Louder Than Life and embarks on a nationwide tour, Cavalera’s enduring legacy in the metal scene serves as a testament to the transformative power of music and the enduring spirit of artistic exploration.
