Beyond the Streets, known for its meticulous curation of art and programming, has established itself as a global authority in the art world. With exhibitions spanning across major cities like Los Angeles, New York, London, and Shanghai, Beyond the Streets has evolved from a passionate art collective to an internationally renowned movement, celebrated for its comprehensive showcases that view art as both resistance and narrative.
The latest curated exploration by Beyond the Streets delves into the subversive art, groundbreaking music, and DIY spirit of GWAR. Titled LET THERE BE GWAR, this retrospective exhibition in Los Angeles showcases the most extensive collection of GWAR artifacts ever assembled. The gallery immerses visitors in the universe created by GWAR over the past four decades, featuring handcrafted costumes, instruments, weaponry, stage props, video installations, set pieces, and rare Easter eggs for diehard fans.
The exhibition kicks off by narrating GWAR’s humble beginnings in 1984 when a group of Richmond art punks came together in an abandoned dairy. From these origins, GWAR has evolved into a cultural icon in heavy music and absurdist theater, driven by a unique DIY ethos that continues to define the band today. GWAR’s artistic approach, inspired by underground comics, science fiction, role-playing games, and satirical elements, has been a cornerstone of their enduring appeal.
GWAR’s enduring impact on American culture as a successful long-term art collective is undeniable. The band’s influence on both underground and mainstream entertainment is profound, transcending boundaries and genres. Their journey from destruction to creation has left an indelible mark on the artistic landscape, showcasing a blend of shock rock and anti-art aesthetics that resonate with audiences across generations.
Curator Roger Gastman emphasizes that LET THERE BE GWAR is more than a music exhibition; it represents a significant cultural phenomenon. The collection not only celebrates GWAR’s artistic legacy but also pays homage to their lasting influence on various forms of entertainment. GWAR’s ability to challenge conventions and create something timeless is a testament to their enduring relevance in the art world.
Accompanying the exhibition launch is a co-branded collection between BEYOND THE STREETS and GWAR. This collection includes an expanded version of the ‘LET THERE BE GWAR’ book, a limited edition 7” record, classic Mind Control Monthly newsletters, exclusive apparel, prints, and more. The collaboration aims to further immortalize GWAR’s legacy and reach a broader audience with their unique artistic vision.
Photographer Maurice Nunez captured the gallery’s opening festivities, where the Scumdogs of the Universe made appearances alongside special guests like Robert Trujillo of Metallica. The immersive experience of LET THERE BE GWAR will be on display until November 2nd at Beyond the Streets in Los Angeles, offering fans a glimpse into the captivating world of GWAR.
