An anthrax outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo is worsening the security crisis, exacerbating humanitarian needs, and disrupting access to essential services. This crisis is part of a broader surge in infectious diseases, compounding the already critical gaps in healthcare and protection.
The region has witnessed significant violence, leading to the displacement of nearly seven million individuals due to conflicts involving M23 rebels. This displacement crisis has left people living in overcrowded and under-resourced camps, making them highly susceptible to diseases and attacks. Recent events have forced over 660,000 people to flee the Goma region after the government lost control of key cities.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has highlighted the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the urgent need for humanitarian assistance. Outbreaks of mpox and anthrax have been reported in the east, posing a significant threat to public health. While these diseases commonly affect animals, the food scarcity and unsanitary conditions in displacement camps increase the risk of human transmission.
Both mpox and anthrax are dangerous infections that can be contracted through contact with infected animals. While anthrax is not highly contagious, mpox is, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). The recent deaths of animals in Virunga National Park from anthrax poisoning have led to suspected human cases, with one confirmed fatality.
WHO is actively assessing the risk of anthrax spreading further in the region and is focusing on a unified approach to prevent future outbreaks. These infections are treatable with antibiotics and preventable through vaccination, prompting WHO and its partners to prioritize human, animal, and environmental safety. Awareness campaigns and livestock vaccination efforts are underway to contain the spread of anthrax.
The situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo remains a cause for concern, with ongoing violence in various regions leading to civilian casualties and displacement.
