Bangladesh Metal Concert Cancelled Over Security Concerns

Heavy metal fans in Bangladesh faced disappointment as Brazilian death metal bands Krisiun and NervoChaos were barred from performing in Dhaka. The Metal Morgue concert, part of the bands’ Asia tour, was canceled last minute due to undisclosed security concerns, leaving fans and local bands in dismay.

Despite having obtained necessary permissions, the bands were denied entry upon arrival at Hazrat Shahjala International Airport. Their passports were confiscated, and they were held up for over 10 hours before being released following intervention by the Brazilian embassy. The ordeal stemmed from a lack of security clearance from the Home Ministry.

Krisiun, a prominent death metal band formed in 1990, expressed their frustration on social media, highlighting the misunderstanding and prejudice they faced in Bangladesh. NervoChaos, founded in 1996, also expressed disappointment over the cancellation of the concert and the disregard for their obtained visas.

The security situation in Bangladesh, marred by past militant attacks, prompted heightened scrutiny, leading to the cancellation of the metal concert. While some reports hinted at blasphemy law involvement, it was clarified that Bangladesh does not have such laws, dispelling misconceptions surrounding the band’s detention.

Local fans expressed remorse over the missed opportunity to witness their favorite bands perform live. The cancellation not only affected the international bands but also local performers who lost a platform to showcase their talent on a larger scale.

The incident shed light on the challenges faced by the metal scene in Bangladesh, with conservatives often showing negative attitudes towards the genre. Despite the setback, Krisiun conveyed gratitude to their Bangladeshi fans and expressed hope for a future concert in the country.

This was not the first instance of a metal concert cancellation in Bangladesh, as similar incidents have occurred in the past citing security concerns. The perceived discrimination against metal culture compared to other music genres has sparked debates among fans and artists alike.

Following the concert cancellation, the Brazilian bands redirected their tour to Japan, marking an unfortunate end to their anticipated performances in Bangladesh. The incident underscored the complexities of hosting international metal acts in a country grappling with security challenges and cultural sensitivities.
