Fresh off the presses in October 2023, Thriller’s debut album, “Street Metal,” explodes onto the scene with a potent blend of classic heavy metal energy and a modern, urban edge. This German outfit isn’t afraid to wear its influences on its leather sleeve, channeling the spirit of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden while injecting a youthful exuberance that’s sure to resonate with a new generation of headbangers.
Opener “Iron Goddess” kicks down the door with a flurry of galloping riffs and soaring vocals. Singer Tom “The Thrilla” Wittke possesses a powerful, versatile voice that perfectly captures the rebellious spirit of the music. The rhythm section lays down a tight foundation, with drummer Marco “The Machine” Beck delivering a masterclass in double-kick precision.
“Street Metal” isn’t just about brute force, though. Tracks like “Aiming for Freedom” showcase the band’s knack for crafting catchy hooks and sing-along choruses. Guitarists Chris “The Razer” Razer and Andy “The Bulldozer” Bulldozer trade off leads that are both technically impressive and undeniably melodic. There’s a sense of fun and camaraderie in their playing that’s infectious, making you want to grab an air guitar and join the mosh pit.
The album isn’t without minor stumbles. A couple of tracks in the middle section feel a tad derivative, and the overall production, while solid, lacks the polish of some bigger-budget releases. However, these are forgivable shortcomings for a debut effort.
“Street Metal” is a thrilling (pun intended) ride for fans of traditional heavy metal with a modern twist. Thriller showcases a tightly knit unit with a clear passion for the genre’s golden age. If you’re looking for an album that will get your head banging and fists pumping, look no further than “Street Metal.” This is a band to keep an eye on, with the potential to become major players in the metal scene for years to come.
