Renowned drummer Chris Adler, known for his work with bands like Lamb of God and Megadeth, recently revealed that he was offered a spot in the legendary thrash metal group Testament following his departure from Lamb of God. In a candid interview, Adler shared insights into his career trajectory and the opportunities that have come his way.
Reflecting on his drumming journey, Adler mentioned that he often receives invitations to collaborate with various bands, showcasing his versatility and talent. Despite the familiarity of expectations from his past work, Adler expressed a desire to explore new challenges and musical avenues in what he refers to as “chapter two” of his career.
One notable offer that came his way was from Testament, a prominent figure in the Bay Area thrash metal scene. After Gene Hoglan’s departure from Testament in 2022, the band reached out to Adler to fill the drumming position. However, due to personal circumstances including a difficult divorce, the loss of his mother, and health issues, Adler made the decision to decline the opportunity.
Gene Hoglan’s history with Testament dates back to the 1990s, with intermittent periods of involvement until his more permanent role starting in 2011. Following his exit in 2022, Testament enlisted the talents of renowned drummer Dave Lombardo before ultimately selecting Chris Dovas as their new drummer in 2023. Notably, Adler had previously contributed to Testament’s track “A Day in the Death” as a bonus addition to their album Dark Roots of Earth in 2012.
Adler emphasized the importance of prioritizing his well-being and personal fulfillment, stating that he is currently dedicated to his own band, Firstborne. While opportunities continue to present themselves, Adler expressed contentment in selectively choosing projects that resonate with him, underscoring the value of personal fulfillment and artistic integrity in his career.
As Adler navigates the evolving landscape of his musical journey, his experiences shed light on the nuanced decisions and challenges faced by musicians in the industry. His openness about balancing personal struggles with professional opportunities offers a glimpse into the multifaceted nature of artistic pursuits and the significance of self-care amidst career transitions.
